Our Company History

Taylor Box Company was founded in 1885 by Clarence Taylor in Providence, Rhode Island, as a manufacturer of jewelry cards, packaging for locally manufactured products and retail gift boxes.  In those days we delivered boxes in the horse drawn wagon you see at right.  In the early 1920s the company was purchased by Howard Scholes, a Brooklyn, New Yorker who had just married a local Edgewood, RI woman.  The company moved several times within metropolitan Providence as it grew by adding customers in the small machine tool and silverware industries.  In 1950 Mr. Scholes son-in-law, Martin Shedd, a WWll veteran and Tufts educated engineer joined the company.  The growing company decided to leave Providence in 1952 and settled into our current facility in Warren, Rhode Island, a small town of at the head of Narragansett Bay.  The 16,000sf. one story building, orginally a brewery, became available when its last tenant, a silk weaving operation, followed the textile industry south.

The company continued to grow through the 50s and 60s as the regions small entreprenureal jewelry, silverware, tooling and consumer products companies prospered.  Howard Scholes retired in 1968 and in the mid-70s Martin Shedd's two sons, Dan and Dave joined the company.  The company added a New York sales office in 1976 and had a great deal of success in the very challenging NYC marketplace. In 1980 Martin Shedd retired and his sons took over just as the economy began to change from manufacturing based to technology based.  Many of the company's long time customers moved to Mexico and Asia while software and other technology companies began to take their place.  The company adapted quickly and produced packaging for Lotus Development's US 123; WANG Lab's OFFICE ASSISTANT and many other national software brands.  However, software soon evolved away from packaged products with weighty instructional documentation to virtual online documentation and reinvention was again the order of the day.   As we entered the new millenium the company's reputation and sales effort grew to encompass a national audience and the packaging solutions offered by the company grew to match demand.

Today we provide packaging to customers across the country; both Fortune 500 as well as small privately owned from our substantially improved Warren location.  Over the past half century we've expanded our facility to 60,000sf. of state of the art manufacturing.  The production floor equipment list features high speed autoplaten die-cutting, large format foil stamping, revolutionary Emmeci box and case-making equipment resulting in increased manufacturing flexibility, precision and quality.  Our talented design staff has a studio with the hardware and application software needed to support customer projects to a successful conclusion.

In short, we are award-winning designers and producers of image enhancing paperboard packaging.  Our national reputation is built upon our capability to reliably partner with our customers and their creative team to produce packaging that is uniquely brand defining.
